Five largely unambiguous words: Health. Prevention.
Interdependence. Responsibility, Cooperation. Together they offer a powerful foundation
for building a better and more sustainable world.
1. Health — What are we trying to protect and
improve? Not just physical health, but
the health of mind, body, spirit, family, community, environment, government,
and economy. A healthy world requires healthy, functioning relationships among
all of them.
2. Prevention — How do we protect what matters? Preventing disease, violence, poverty,
environmental destruction, and other problems is generally less costly—in
lives, suffering, and money—than trying to repair the damage afterward.
3. Interdependence — What reality must we recognize? People, nations, economies, and ecosystems
depend on one another. Our security and well-being cannot be sustained by
treating ourselves as independent of the systems and people around us.
4. Responsibility — What must we do? Recognizing our interdependence is not
enough. We must accept responsibility for the consequences of our individual
and collective decisions, including their effects on future generations.
These words work together
HEALTH: The outcome we seek
PREVENTION: The
strategy we use
INTERDEPENDENCE: The
reality we recognize
RESPONSIBILITY: The
obligation we accept
COOPERATION: United across organizations,
communities, and nations for sustainability.
Five essential questions answered:
Why? Health.
How do we avoid harm and costs? Prevention.
What must we understand? Interdependence.
How can we make progress? Responsibly
How do we make progress together? Cooperation.
The underlying principle is simple: We cannot build a
healthy, sustainable world by treating interconnected problems as if they were
independent of one another, and to accomplish this…we must unite.
